October is known by many as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the World Health Organization “there were 7.8 million women alive who were diagnosed with breast cancer in the past 5 years, making it the world’s most prevalent cancer.” This month I not only wanted to call awareness to this heartbreaking illness, but I also wanted to create a product for my fellow woman that would be uplifting, inspiring, and empowering. That’s where the KT Mug comes in; a boobie mug embodying femininity.
The Inspiration Behind the KT Mug
The KT Mug is named for a dear friend of mine, KT. KT is an inspiring individual who, like many others, battled breast cancer. She is a strong and intelligent women who is fierce in her business and loving as a friend. She is talented and generous and watching her navigate breast cancer was completely humbling. Her “I can achieve anything” attitude certainly came through even in the midst of Covid. KT, I am so proud of your strength am thrilled to be naming this piece for you!
The Process of Creating this Feminine Boobie Mug
I think there is something so powerful about sculpting and mainstreaming the female form. When creating this boobie mug, I wanted the piece to add a delicate, yet powerful touch to any space, symbolizing the strength and beauty of women.
To create this mug, we went through a multistep process to achieve our desired look.
First, I threw the mug shape on the wheel and pulled the handles. They were too soft to the touch so I allowed them to dry overnight so the clay would become less malleable.
I trimmed the bottoms and sculpted on each unique and beautiful set of breasts. Each set is different and perfectly imperfect, just like every woman.
Then I attached the handles. The pieces were wet down thoroughly at this point to help distribute the moisture evenly.
The next step was to store the pieces in a cabinet to allow them to slowly and evenly dry out. This slow dry time is very important to ensure the pieces don't crack. Once the pieces were completely dry, they were fired, glazed, fired again, detailed with our 22k gold, and fired a final time!
This process, though time-consuming and detailed, is truly one of my favorite pieces to create.
